Join Seamus Murphy, a knowledgeable and experienced hill walker, for a guided hike on Slieve Gullion Mountain to learn about the ancient summer tradition of the Booley. Transhumance or Booleying saw animals being moved onto the mountain every summer to benefit from the rich pasture. The animals were accompanied by a herdsman – often a young person, who would build and live in a booley or hut to keep an eye on his animals. Seamus will lead this hike along old droving tracks and take in visits to some of the sites used, helping participants imagine the life of a lonely herder. This hike will take place on open mountain with sections of boggy ground, hiking boots are essential (trainers are not sufficient). This is a FREE event but booking is essential.
