Lúnasa Festival 2017 – Booley site hike

Join Seamus for a guided hike on Slieve Gullion mountain to learn about the ancient summer tradition of booleying and visit the sites used.

Join Seamus Murphy, a knowledgeable and experienced hill walker, for a guided hike on Slieve Gullion Mountain to learn about the ancient summer tradition of the Booley. Transhumance or booleying  saw cattle herds being driven to mountain grazing at the feast of Bealtaine to keep the lowland grass for winter. The young people of the community herded the cattle and milked the cows while older women churned butter.

Jumbles of stones or low walls on patches of bright green grass alongside watercourses show where the booley huts once stood. Seamus will lead this hike to the Ballintemple booley sites, looking for the old droving routes and signs of human habitation such as abandoned potato beds.

This hike will take place on open mountain with sections of boggy ground: hiking boots are essential (trainers are not sufficient).

Cost: £2 – payable on the day
