We invite you to join Seamus Murphy, a knowledgeable and experienced hill walker, for a guided hike on Slieve Gullion Mountain to visit and learn about the Famine Walls.
The Famine Walls were government relief works for the starving, built in Black 1847 at the rate of 10d (old pence) a day for men and 4d for the women, who carried stones to the men in canvas aprons. At the highest point of the wall, walkers will be asked to stop, find a fallen stone and replace it on the wall in memory of those who built it.
Most of this hike will take place on steep, rough open mountain ground; hiking boots are essential and a walking pole is recommended, as is a reasonable fitness level.
Cost: £2 – payable on the day
