A Special Presentation by Alan Wood
Part of the Ring of Gullion Autumn Festival 2025
We’re excited to welcome Alan Wood — singer, researcher, and archivist — to South Armagh for a compelling presentation on the legendary Irish folk singer Margaret Barry.
In With the Banjo on My Side, Alan explores Barry’s extraordinary journey. He shares stories, recordings, and insights into her life and music.
A Voice That Echoed Worldwide
In 1951, folklorist Alan Lomax met Margaret Barry in Dundalk. Seán Ó Boyle had tipped him off. Lomax and his assistant Robin Roberts recorded Barry, launching a collaboration that introduced her voice to international audiences.
Meet the Presenter
Alan Wood, from County Leitrim, works with the Irish Traditional Music Archive in Dublin. He brings deep knowledge and a passion for Irish folk music to this event.
🎶 Music and Supper
After the talk, enjoy a live performance of Margaret Barry’s songs by her family members. We’ll also serve a light supper — a perfect way to end the evening.
