Volunteer Opportunity – Restoring Jonesborough Forest

Giving the forest site one last check-up and tidy before it's summer opening.

You are warmly invited to join the Ring of Gullion Conservation Volunteers with the restoration of Jonesborough Forest, situated behind the Pastoral Centre.  The forest was planted roughly 30 years ago, with beautiful stone lined gravel paths and picnic benches throughout the forest.

Over the intervening years the forest has suffered from a lack of management and as a result had become overgrown to the point where it was impossible to access the forests and use the paths.  That was until 2014 when volunteers began restoring the forest to a usable state.

If you’d like to lend a hand and volunteer we’ll be preparing the site for a summer opening.  The trees need to be checked for tree guards and associated support rods, which if found will need to be removed.  The circular path needs to be raked and cleared in sections to make it completely passable for walkers and some litter needs to be cleared from the site.  We’re also looking for suggestions for a cleared section at the start of the forest.
