Volunteer Opportunity – Seed collection POSTPONED

Collecting native tree seeds and fruits for later propagation in the tree nursery.

Please note this work day has been postponed due to bad weather.

With autumn upon us it is time to collect the seeds and fruit from native trees for our tree nursery. Last year volunteers helped us collect lots of alder cones, crab apples, sloes and acorns. Whilst the alder and sloes didn’t do particularly well, we have an excellent crop of oak and crab apple trees growing in our nursery, which wouldn’t have been possible without their help.

We’ll be taking a stroll along the Newry Canal path just outside Newry, as it has a good range of plants that we need at a good height for harvesting. If you’d like to come along please bring along a bag to collect seeds in, we’ll be amalgamating the collected seeds and fruits into larger bags so you can take your bag home again; a hooked stick is also useful, if you happen to have one. You also need to bring  weather appropriate clothing, sturdy footwear (hiking boots are ideal) and a packed lunch.

In return for your help collecting tree seeds this year, you are welcome to have one of our tree saplings from the nursery to take home and plant in your garden. We have alder and willow, which are good for wet ground, as well as oak, rowan, birch and some hawthorn. If you’d like a tree, let us know what sort of tree you’d like when you’re registering for the work day and we will bring it with us from the nursery.

Registration is essential.
