Alliance Youth Works

Alliance Youth Works, Eden (EDucation in the ENvironment) is a charity that enthuses children, young people and their leaders to understand more about the world around them.  Alliance Youth Works (AYW) also encourages them to get out into the wild, and do something to support and enhance the biodiversity around them.  Over the past decade, AYW Eden has been engaging with local primary schools in the Newry & Mourne area, delivering one-day environmental education programmes and trips out into nature throughout the academic year and in all weathers!

Teachers wanting to give their students an experience in the outdoors that is fun, interactive, awe inspiring, and interwoven with the Revised Curriculum and STEM, will find the programmes exactly what they need.

Themes include, birds, pond dipping, exploring woodlands, mammals, mini-beasts, seashore, the Mourne mountains, the Ring of Gullion, exploring outdoors using senses, team building outdoors, orienteering and mapping, and teddy bears’ picnics.

Residential programmes on biodiversity are available in partnership with Castlewellan Castle’s Christian Conference Centre.

Alliance Youth Works Eden:

  • Run after-school nature/eco-clubs, in school grounds.
  • Cover environmental themed badge work for uniformed youth organisations.
  • Are a delivery partner for Eco-schools and can visit local primary schools to advise on sustainable development of school grounds and to enhance biodiversity on site. Support can simply include telephone or e-mailed advice, or the transfer of established programmes to school grounds e.g. mini-beast hunts, pond dipping, woodland walks, and bird watching sessions.

If transport is too costly AYW can operate in suitable outdoor locations closer to schools, or within school grounds.  All programmes can be tailored to suit individual needs.

Programmes run from 10.00 to 14.00 and cost £3.50 per pupil.  There is a call out fee for school outreach work, plus £2.50 per pupil if an activity is involved, as well as staff travel from our local offices.

For information on AYW sites and programmes just visit their website.
