Building better homes for birds in the Ring of Gullion

A great time was had by all in the Pastoral Centre in Jonesborough on Valentine’s day creating nest boxes. The Ring of Gullion AONB Project had joined up with Ulster Wildlife to organize the workshop as part of National Nest Box week.
Therese Hamill, Ring of Gullion AONB Officer said “It’s the time, we remind ourselves to give courting birds a warm, secure home for raising the next generation”.
Christine Chambers, Development Officer for Ulster Wildlife add “We suggest attendees to create their own little nature reserve. Even the smallest of spaces can make a big difference to wildlife conservation”.
National Nest Box Week takes places from 14-21 February 2015 and it’s a chance for everyone to encourage birds in their garden to come home to roost! The idea behind the week is to get us all to put up nest boxes in our local areas, not only to protect the wildlife we already have, but to encourage even more birds to brood in our backyards.
Natural nest sites for birds such as holes in trees or old buildings are disappearing fast as gardens are ‘tidied’ and old houses are repaired. Taking part in NNBW gives you the chance to contribute to bird conservation whilst giving you the pleasure of observing any breeding birds that you attract to your nest box.
