Mourne Gullion Strangford UNESCO Global Geopark Launches Strategic Framework for 2025–2033
The Mourne Gullion Strangford Geopark has launched a new Strategic Framework, setting out its vision and direction for the next decade. This important initiative will guide conservation, education, community engagement, and sustainable development across one of Northern Ireland’s most treasured landscapes.
What’s Included in the Framework?
The Strategic Framework is made up of three connected documents:
Strategy 2025–2033 – A long-term vision focused on protecting people, place, and nature
Management Plan 2025–2029 – Details on governance, accountability, and progress tracking
Action Plan 2025–2029 – A practical set of actions reviewed quarterly to deliver results
Together, these documents form a clear roadmap for the Geopark’s future.
At the launch event, Councillor Geraldine Kearns, Deputy Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, shared her thoughts:
“This is a proud moment for our district. The Mourne Gullion Strangford Geopark is an international designation, but it belongs to our communities. These plans show how we will protect and enhance our landscapes and heritage, while delivering real benefits for local people, visitors, and future generations.”
A UNESCO Global Geopark
The Geopark was awarded UNESCO Global Geopark status in May 2023. It covers:
The Mourne Mountains
The Ring of Gullion
Strangford and Lecale and the seas around our coast.
This vast area spans 1,931 square kilometres and is home to over 182,000 residents. Its landscapes tell a geological story that stretches back hundreds of millions of years.
A Vision for People and Planet
The Strategic Framework follows UNESCO’s theme:
“Celebrating Earth Heritage, Sustaining Local Communities.”
It aims to:
– Protect nature and biodiversity
– Promote sustainable tourism
– Support education and lifelong learning
– Empower communities to shape their environment.
