Volunteer Opportunity – Seed processing

Removing seeds from berries and planting them directly into compost or stratifying them in a mixture of sand and leaf mould in order to break the seeds hibernation.

We need volunteer help to process a selection of Blackthorn, Hawthorn, Holly and Rowan berries to prepare them for stratification or planting, as part of our tree nursery project.  Stratification is the process used to break the hibernation by mimicking the process of the seed being eaten by a bird.  This is a gentle hands on activity involving squeezing seeds from the berries and either planting them directly in compost or placing them in a mixture of sand and leaf mould for the winter.

All you need to bring with you is a packed lunch, alternatively you can buy food in Grounded café, and weather appropriate clothing.

We’ll be meeting at the gate into the Slieve Gullion Courtyard pond and can finish early to fit in around school runs.
