Cuimhneamh are delighted to announce their programme of events for their annual Michael J. Murphy Winter School on Friday November 24th and Saturday November 25th 2023.

To mark the 225th centenary of the United Irishmen Rebellion of 1798, this year’s forum will focus on the uprising itself, with particular emphasis on how it played out across the wider south Armagh and Newry areas.

The annual Michael J. Murphy Winter School will start on Friday 24th November at 7.00pm with a bi-lingual talk in conjunction with Gaelphobal Ard Mhacha Theas, Séamus Mac Dhaibhéid called ‘Bráithreachas an Gheana – The United Irishmen in Newry’. The talk will be interspersed with songs of 1798 sung by Blaithín Mhic Cana. Following on from this, at 8pm Kevin Murphy will look at the 1780s and 1790s in South Armagh in ‘Setting The Scene’.

On Saturday at 1pm, join local historian Kevin Murphy as he leads a guided bus tour of significant (and often overlooked) sites relating to the United Irishmen Rebellion of 1798 across the parish of Forkhill and Mullaghbawn; including Forkhill Church of Ireland; Belmont Barracks; and the Market Stone to name but a few. This event is limited to 20 people and costs £10 per person, bookable via Eventbrite.

At 7pm on Saturday the Keynote Lecture on 1798 will be given by Professor Kevin Whelan of Notre Dame University, Dublin. This will be followed by a Forum chaired by Anthony Russell entitled ‘Is 1798 Relevant in the Twenty-First Century?’ The panel of speakers in the Forum are : Steven McCracken, Catherine Pollock, Seán Napier and Odhrán de Bhaldraithe.

All events, except the train, are free, but a contribution to help with expenses is welcome. There will be a competition for schools and the prizes will be presented on Friday evening. A 1798 Exhibition ‘Beyond The Battle’ will be on show in Tí Chulainn for the two weeks surrounding the Winter School. Refreshments will be served on both evenings.
